The unreal

the unreal“The unreal is more powerful than the real. Because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because it’s only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on. If you can change the way people think. The way they see themselves. The way they see the world. You can change the way people live their lives. That’s the only lasting thing you can create.”   Chuck Palahniuk

Life’s all about cause and effect. A man without a cause has no effect on the world. A man without a cause crumbles under the pressure of the mundane. Day in and day out he struggles to find a purpose, a reason, a battle worth fighting. He feels as if wasting time, as if something bigger than himself is always running away, day after day after day.

No man is an island, and a way a man sees himself will affect the way he sees those around him. Those he wants to love. Those he wants to save. Those he wants to protect.

And a man must, at times, be willing to sacrifice who he is in order to do any of those things.

Most people would believe that art is some sort of noble adventure of the soul. What happens when passion fills someone’s soul. What happens when hearts break.

But art is a bridge, you see. Art is a way of finding others, of changing their lives, of changing the way they think about themselves, or the world around them, or the past, or love, or hate, or courage. It’s a way of talking to someone you’ll never even meet. Someone you could never possibly meet. Because you’ll be long dead when they’ll find your message, in the form of a painting or a song or a short story.

We always reach out to others. We just pretend we don’t see it. But we do. Every moment of every day, every thought, every action, no matter how insignificant. We live and breathe for others. So… why don’t we try to do what is right? Why don’t we try to fight against what we know, deep inside our hearts, to be evil?

It’s not easy, it’s not simple.

It’s the most difficult thing to do. To change things for the better. To change yourself for the better. To fight old habits. To step outside your comfort zone. To do what scares you most.

But then, once it’s done, it becomes the easiest damned thing.

Building a bridge takes time and patience and courage. It takes a little bit of faith. And luck. But this should only encourage you to do your best.

Build your bridge, reach out to others. Tell yourself what is it that you want to see changed. Be that change. Create it. Invent it. Re-invent it if you must.

What great thoughts. And what a great quote. I love it. :)

This picture reminds me on the Spanish novel Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes.

  3. Beautiful! I truly agree. Art is about creating, not only a beautiful painting or a superb story… But creating a bridge to reach out others. :-)

That is so true, when you finally manage to change for the better and kill all the old habits, it becomes the easiest damn thing. I’ve done it, and what’s sad is I’ve slipped into the old habits as well, and they are also the easiest damn thing too.
