Dark night of the soul…

“Now the standard cure for one who is sunk is to consider those in actual destitution or physical suffering—this is an all-weather beatitude for gloom in general and fairly salutary day-time advice for everyone. But at three o’clock in the morning, a forgotten package has the same tragic importance as a death sentence, and the cure doesn’t work—and in a real dark night of the soul it is always three o’clock in the morning, day after day.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

Life is a matter of perspective. What we call reality is limited to how much we perceive. Or how we perceive. Or what we want to perceive.

Events in themselves are meaningless. We attach a certain meaning to them, we choose what we feel, think, and how we react.

Simply put, it’s not up to us what happens to us, but it’s entirely our choice how we respond. Our destiny lies both in our stars, but also in ourselves, and ultimately our choices become our destiny.

I’ve been going through a hard time lately, trying to figure out what to do with my life, trying to attach a certain meaning to recent events.

Because the real dark night of the soul appears when life seems meaningless, when you don’t what you’re sad about. Everything feels hopeless.

The truth is that, no matter what people tell you, the amount of hope you can store inside your heart is the single most important factor to how well you’ll do in life.

Hope, of course, is a double edged sword. It is our greatest strength and our greatest weakness. Hope has to be accompanied by action. We need to use hope in order to face our fears, in order to follow our hearts towards greatness.

Courage is when one indvidual’s hope is stronger than his fear.

So we must hope, and keep on hoping as we endure a dark night of the soul, and we must see the dawn even if it seems we have become darkness.

For this is the way of the world.

Hope gives perspective new wings to fly on.

  2. I agree and thank you. I find hope in the little seeds that I did plant that continue to grow and glow. This give me hope to do the same. Yet…. it is that feeling… that strange feeling… do I matter…. I look in my cats eyes.. I know I do…. especially when it comes to getting up to feed them.
