Blogging: A newbie’s guide

So, you’ve decided to start a blog. Or you already have one, but you just don’t know what to do with it. Well, you’ve come to the right place.

First of all, I’d like to tell you that there is no recipe, no how-to guide. Blogging is, like writing, an art, which makes it subjective and hard to simplify in a set of rules and guidelines.

If you decided to start a blog, that’s because you enjoy reading other blogs and/or think you have something important to say. That’s passion, and it is one of the most important tools.

Forget about fancy themes and whatnot. Forget about paying for ads and stuff. Find your passion first.

Content is king.

The story. The words you write. The things you write about.

It’s got to be like an itch. You just got to scratch it. You just got to write…

If what you’re writing at the time is just meh, then I urge you to find something else to write about. Something that really excites you.

There’s nothing like that in your life?

Well, find it.

Because if there’s something that elicits an emotional response from you, so strong that you’ve got to write about it, then most certainly, it will also elicit a certain emotional response from other people. Like-minded people, so to say.

If you feel strongly about the subject matter of your blog, you will attract people who feel the same way.

If you’re meh about it, guess what kind of people you’ll attract. That’s right.

What else?

Oh, yeah. Have fun. I mean, really enjoy yourself. You’re not killing anyone, you’re not deciding the fate of the world. Just don’t take this whole thing too seriously. Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself.

To paraphrase Salvador Dali, have no fear of perfection. You’ll never reach it.

  1. Agreed! I am not really new to blogging, just new to WordPress and ‘niche writing’. This is going to be a little bit of a learning curve but at the same time, I hope to have something of value to share with the rest of the world anyway. ;)
