Want to know the irony?
Odds are that it will probably take me more than 15 minutes to write this post.
But I know this is not why you are reading this post. You want to know how to save precious time. Because time is never enough. And how to write a blog post in 15 minutes, which is what? A bus drive? Not even that. A bit of your lunch break? A cigarette and two sips of coffee, if you’re into that sort of thing?
But please be aware of this: yes, content is king. Yes, if you can, you should spend as much time as possible writing, rewriting, editing, and polishing each of your posts. But if you’re on a tight schedule, being able to write fast is a blessing.
Writing that fast does not mean giving up on quality. If you follow these tips, you won’t be.
1. Write down your best ideas.
Inspiration is kind of a jerk. Has all kinds of bad habits, and it usually strikes when you can’t write. What you can do is write down your idea on your phone or go old school and scribble it down in a notepad or something. Like they used to do before technology was cool.
Why do this?
Well, because if you think about it, coming up with a topic to write about takes about half of your time. Maybe even more.
If you keep a list of your best ideas, then you can write a post whenever you have the time to do so, without having to spend a lot of time rummaging through your brain for topics.
2. Give your ideas a bit of breathing space.
Here’s the thing: most of the times you’re not going to be able to write about this brilliant idea of yours right away, because you need to develop supporting claims and all that. You know, the how that supports the what.
Give your ideas a bit of breathing space. Add new ideas to this brilliant one. Think of the way you’d open your blog, what headline to best use.
I found that if you hold an idea in your mind for a few days, your subconscious will do most of the work for you. You wake up one morning, sit at your desk, and you know what to write.
True story. This is what happened to me when writing this post.
3. Don’t use too many ideas.
The thing is to write a post in 15 minutes, not War and Peace. You only need a few ideas to support your main one. You can also write an ending that references your opening lines, so you got that covered.
Don’t go too much in depth. Be as concise as possible.
4. Use lists, bullet points.
Bullet points, or numbered lists, like “9 Mistakes That Will Screw Up Your Blog”, can make writing a blog post a lot easier, because you’re not banging your head against the keyboard trying to transition from idea to idea.
You do not need to come up with a long and coherent narrative for your post.
Oh, and did I mention that readers love lists? Maybe for the same reasons.
5. Keep it nice and short
If you want to write a blog post in 15 minutes or so, then you need to keep it under 400-500 words. Truth be told, you can write about any topic, as long as you make every word count.
Blog posts are about making a point.
Can you convince someone of something in 2 minutes or less? Great. You can provide your readers with a post that takes roughly two minutes to read.
You do not have to compromise on quality if you follow all the rules of writing a great blog post.
6. Be fast and furious
You know what’s screwing you big time?
You get stuck on something, and you try to force yourself.
Let me introduce you to the power of NEXT.
When you get stuck on a blog post, and your mind is as blank as a white sheet of paper, just yell NEXT! and work on something else. Or don’t yell if you like to write in public spaces. But you get the idea.
You wouldn’t believe how many drafts of blog posts I have, how many titles, how many ideas on my phone or scribbled in this cute notepad that sits on my desk.
It is important to switch from one blog post to another, writing a few minutes on each until you run out of words. This is going to save you a lot of time.
7. Never postpone a great idea
Procrastination. The habit of doing nothing, while obsessing about the thing you should be doing.
Truth is, we all have a mental list of priorities. Odds are that you, too, have a mental list of your most brilliant ideas for blog posts.
What’s the one that gets you most excited? The one that’s already half-written in your mind?
Well, what are you waiting for?
Write the damn post. Punch the damn keys.
Writing blog posts is like a muscle. The more you train it, the stronger it gets. And the more posts you write, the easier it is to connect the dots, to make certain references, to figure out the structure of a post in a fraction of the time it takes others to do so.
