The Perks of Being a Writer

irevuo

When I tell people I’m a writer they usually ask me how much I earn. I usually smile and say “enough.” I’ve been giving this answer even before I started earning money, when my stories were available for free on Wattpad.

The thing is that being a writer, or any other kind of artist, also means that most probably you’ll never earn a lot of money. Million dollar advances are extremely rare. Besides, I’m quite sure that most artists aren’t in this for money.

But what exactly do you earn if not money? Is there something else to being a writer?

  1. I totally agree with you, being an artist is not about the money. It can’t be. And to answer your question, for me there’s so much to being an artist; passion, therapy, balance, being able to express myself and just being me.

  2. I once told someone I write to get things out of my head and for myself more than anyone else. I’m an obsessive thinker (ie half my work emails are rewritten in my head at midnight when I’m trying to sleep) so when I can write them out I can somewhat stop thinking about it. I admit I wouldn’t mind making some money off writing but I’d never want to get so obsessed with writing and making money off it that it loses the fun of writing.

  3. Writing for me is playing and enjoying life. I also write to further my thinking. I gain stronger convictions by writing out what I’m really thinking.
