Regardless of your religious preference (or, lack thereof), it’s probably safe to say that you’ve been exposed to the first half of this scripture, at some point in your life— though, you’ve probably seen it in paraphrased meme form…

If you already have a personal relationship with God, then you probably chuckle at the cleverness of this sentiment, every time you happen across this meme. However, if you are but a new creature in Christ, then this passage can understandably be misconstrued. When taken literally, the first half of this verse has a tendency to make God appear more like an overbearing, condescending, micromanaging boss— as opposed to the merciful and loving deity that He is.
