Many Who Critique The Painting Have Barely Held A Brush

One of the bitter truths of life is that we are constantly tearing ourselves apart because of people who have yet to step in our shoes. And we don’t even realize that if they were, indeed, to step in our shoes, they’d fall the first step.

So I ask you this: why are you thinking so much about what others think of you?

Maybe it’s because you do not feel yourself good enough to get the job done. You want some one to cheer you along. Someone to encourage you. Maybe it’s because you are not doing it for yourself, but for others’ approval. If that is so, then you will die inside whenever they reject you. Because they will. Sooner or later.

Haters will see you walk on water and say it’s because you can’t swim.

Accept this and move on.

Do your thing. Focus on what you want to do, and how is that going to improve your life.

You are never going to reach your goal if you stop for every single person who doesn’t believe in you.

Better yet, you can use their doubts towards you as fuel. You can use their criticism to motivate you to accomplish your goal. It’s proof that you MUST do it. Because they don’t believe in your.

And the funny thing is: people will tell you that you can’t do it, and after they’ve seen you do it, they will tell you that it was easy. Too easy.

Haters hate you because they don’t want to spend time hating themselves.

Keep that in mind next time you feel like wanting someone’s approval.

  1. You’re so right. I do find there’s a difference when tone is involved. People who just say it sucks need to explain why to be taken seriously.

While it’s true what they say about customers knowing what they like in, say, a pasta dish from a fancy restaurant, but you know who makes that dish by the descriptions they use; you know someone who’s in touch with their preferences by the wording.

Do you not like it because you prefer it another way, or because you know for sure there’s too much oregano?

  2. Its easy to criticize people than to be honest and like them or what they do. For many years the ones I needed the encouragement from were the ones that criticized me the most. Now I can live my life knowing what I do and how I chose to do it is enough for me.

    Awesome post :)

  3. After so many years of paying to enter juried art shows and my paintings being rejected, I gave up. Now I feel apathetic towards the art world and it’s liberating. I quit that discouraging scene. They don’t get any more money from me. I don’t have to face rejection. I don’t care. I don’t need their approval. I’m more free than they are. I may never be rich or famous, oh well, I’m having fun.

  4. I think it’s human to want approval, but it can be crippling as you point out. I recently let a couple negative comments get me so down that I stopped working on my second novel for a time. On the other hand, a couple good comments gets me all enthused and fired up to work. Your title for this post does truly say it all. I would do well to remember it. Great post!

  5. i had my fair share of rejections in my poetry and yet i still write because it is my means of understanding or processing things;
but in the past, i used to write to impress, but i learned that it isn’t good for me as a writer, and i hope to continue to grow to be able to call myself a poet
