What do Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have in common?
a. They’re billionaires.
b. They’re passionate about space travel.
c. They use certain mental models and frameworks to simplify complex situations so they can reason through them easily.
d. All of the above.
While everyone knows about Musk and Bezos being billionaires, few know that they also deliberately use mental models every single day, trying to rewire the hunter-gatherer brain and force themselves to go beyond the instincts and short-term objectives that define most people.
Most blogs fail. Why?
The blogger’s journey is bizarre. The basics are there, a Google search away. There’s a plethora of advice to help you get started, build momentum, promote your content, and even monetize it. But then, as your enthusiasm begins to fade, the numbers stop growing. Your content feels stale. You might even begin to think you’re running around in circles, writing about the same topics, over and over again. You’ve hit a plateau. Creatively, you’re bankrupt.
Tactics are temporary. Strategies and frameworks are forever.
Most blogging advice out there is tactical in nature.
It’s actionable, short-sighted, and in the long run, it’s like placing a band-aid on a gunshot wound.
I’m sorry, but in an ecosystem as oversaturated and ultra-competitive as the blogging world, tactics will fail you in the long run.
This course doesn’t teach you how to do it, it teaches you how to think.
The problem with hacks, tricks, and tactics is that they hold your hand towards a particular result.
A trick that helps you get more readers. A tactic that doubles engagement rates.
Fill in the blanks and click publish.
But wouldn’t you like to understand the why? The strategy behind it all? A framework that you can use, again and again, to identify opportunities and then capitalize on them?
Read now, apply 10 minutes later.
It’s not just theory, either. This course provides you with tangible examples of how each framework can be applied. Each of these models can actually be used, so we’ll go through the steps you can take to implement as you go.
Mental models do two things: they help you assess how things work and they help you make better decisions.
For example, how does growing a blog’s audience work (system)? And which type of growth strategy should you deploy (decision)?
A blog is a system for you to reverse engineer and understand. It has many parts that depend on each other, and you want to map out how. As for which strategy to use, that’s a decision you need to make.
Mental models guide you toward the best answer to both questions.
Without mental models, you typically stumble around in one of three ways:
- You go wherever your existing momentum takes you. You don’t ask questions.
- You use your instincts—shaped by past experiences and memorized advice. This is a better approach than blindly following your momentum, but it’s not that much better.
- You follow the tactical advice of those who want to teach you how to do it. While this is the best option of the 3, it’s still not optimal, considering you’re the prisoner of a strict set of steps. There’s no room for innovation or improvisation, and unexpected changes in the system will ensure that you have no other choice but to discard the tactic altogether.
In other words, rather than Googling for a solution and deploying whatever tactic makes the most sense, we use mental models to deconstruct a problem and then arrive at a solution on ourselves.
Mental models don’t teach you how to do it, they teach you how to think.
